আমরা প্রথম থেকেই বাংলাদেশের চলমান তথাকথিত মাদক বিরোধী অভিযানের নিন্দা জানিয়েছি, সমালোচনা করেছি, এই কারণে যে এই অভিযানে বিচার বহির্ভুত হত্যাকাণ্ড ঘটছে। এর পরে আমরা দেখলাম কীভাবে গার্ডিয়ান, লণ্ডন টেলিগ্রাফ, ওয়াল স্ট্রিট জার্নাল, লস এঞ্জেলস টাইমস, ভয়েস অব আমেরিকা সহ আরো অনেক উল্লেখযোগ্য আন্তর্জাতিক সংবাদমাধ্যম এই বিতর্কিত অভিযানের বিষয়ে রিপোর্ট ছাপল। এর ফলে এটাই প্রমাণিত হল যে এই বিতর্কিত অভিযান নিয়ে আমাদের যে উদ্বেগ ছিল সেই একই উদ্বেগ ছিল বিশ্ববাসীর।

শুধু তাই নয়, এখন জাতিসংঘের মানবাধিকার সংস্থা এখন বলছে, “ জাতিসংঘের মানবাধিকার কমিশনার বাংলাদেশে সন্দেহভাজন মাদক ব্যাবসায়িদের বিচার বহির্ভুতভাবে হত্যা করার নিন্দা জানায়, এবং কর্তৃপক্ষকে এই ভয়াবহ মানবাধিকার লঙ্ঘনের ঘটনা অবিলম্বে বন্ধ করা ও অপরাধীদের বিচারের আওতায় আনার আহবান জানায়।

হাই কমিশনার আরো বলেন, সমস্ত বিচার বহির্ভুত ঘটনার অবশ্যই তদন্ত হতে হবে।

“আমি মারাত্মকভাবে উদ্বিগ্ন এই কারনে যে, অনেক মানুষকে হত্যা করা হয়েছে, এবং সরকারের প্রতিক্রিয়া হচ্ছে, এদের কেউই নিরপরাধ নয়, মাদক বিরোধী অভিযানে দুয়েকটা ভুল হতেই পারে," হাই কমিশনার বলেন।

তিনি মন্ত্রী ওবায়দুল কাদেরের বক্তব্যেরও সমালোচনা করেন। “এই ধরণের বিবৃতি (ওবায়দুল কাদের যেই বিবৃতি দিয়েছিলেন) মারাত্মক এবং আইনের শাসনের উপরে সম্পুর্ণ অশ্রদ্ধা প্রকাশ করে। প্রতিটি মানুষের জীবনের নিজস্ব অধিকার আছে," তিনি বলেন।

Right from its beginning we condemned Bangladesh’s anti drug campaign largely because of the extra-judicial killings during the operation. Then we saw how the Guardian, London Telegraph, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Voice of America and other noted international newspapers covered this controversial campaign with their special reports. It became clear that the issue of human rights violations during the campaign which we raised was indeed a matter of concern globally.

Now even the chief of the topmost United Nations human rights body has condemned the extra-judicial killings during this anti drug campaign.

A statement from the office of the High Commissioner of the UN Human Rights said: “UN High Commissioner for Human Rights… condemned the alleged extra-judicial killings of suspected drug offenders in Bangladesh and urged the authorities to ensure that these serious human rights violations are immediately halted and perpetrators brought to justice.”

The high commissioner also said that all cases of killings must be investigated.

“I am gravely concerned that such a large number of people have been killed, and that the Government reaction has been to assure the public that none of these individuals were ‘innocent’ but that mistakes can occur in an anti-narcotics drive,” he said.

He has also condemned the statement of minister Obaidul Quader.

“Such statements (as issued by Obaidul Quader) are dangerous and indicative of a total disregard for the rule of law. Every person has the right to life,” he added.
